Yoga

Lu Jong – Tibetan healing Yoga with Chris and Gery

30 april- 7 maj

The Lu Jong practice is a series of body movements that developed more than 8000 years ago in Tibet. Lu Jong originates in the Buddhist Tantrayana and Bön traditions and it is based on Tibetan Medicine.

Tibetan Medicine understands that diseases are the consequence of imbalanced elements and humors (the vital substances of the body). Through the combination of position, movement and breath, Lu Jong opens the channels in the body and mobilizes misdirected energy. In this way, the practice of Lu Jong helps to cultivate balance on the physical, mental and energetic levels. On the physical level, the movements support the healing processes and also effectively combat disease. With regular practice we become more flexible, strong and improve our overall vitality.

On a mental level, Lu Jong helps us overcome negative emotions like anger and craving in order to achieve emotional balance and increase our energy. Through the exercises of Lu Jong we can influence the mind in such a way that it becomes free and compassionate. Our wellbeing, awareness of our body and inner sensitivity, as well as our power of concentration and clarity are strengthened. On an energetic level, Lu Jong releases blockages and opens the subtle body channels. Reestablishing the proper flow of energy has profound consequences for the health of both body and mind. And when we open our channels, we open our hearts.

This form of Lu Jong originates in the lineage of Tulku Lobsang, who introduced the practice of Lu Jong to the West. Prior to this, he received many years of teachings from masters of different Tibetan Buddhist schools. In this way, he was able to collect these precious exercises and modify them to adapt to Western needs. The result is an extensive program of physical movements, which bring our bodies and minds into balance. The practice of Lu Jong is suitable for all ages and physical abilities. While the movements of Lu Jong are simple, they can surely change your life.

We start the day with a set of beautiful Lu Jong movements, to energize the whole body and to release all the tensions of the body and mind. If you aren’t familiar with the Lu Jong postures, you can join the startersgroup. In this group we learn all the Lu Jong postures gradually with a lot of personal attention. During the day we enjoy the sea, the sunshine and the peace of the wonderful garden. We take our time to relax, to have a good talk, to meditate, to swim….. and to have fun.

In the evening practice we do Tsa Lung exercises (Tibetan breathing movements), guided meditation and relaxation practices. We emphasize in our lesson the ‘stillness in the body, silence in the speech and openness in the mind’ so you can make a deep contact with your true nature. At the end of the week you go home with a released and energetic body and mind.

Opening to Grace Retreat with Carol Macartney

8-15 maj

Carol returns to us for her annual retreat, which will offer participants over 30 hours of practice.

Her own yoga journey spans over twenty years with an abundance of influences from various teachers and styles, so her own style of teaching is a potent cocktail of those flavours. She offers a strong morning Sadhana practice of Meditation, Pranayama and intuitive yoga flow Asana, which welcomes students of varying abilities. The late afternoon practice is more workshop based, sociable and fun, although throughout the retreat there will be an emphasis on self enquiry through silent time and contemplation.

The diversity of the practice she offers brings participants returning each year to invest in a life changing retreat.

Yoga with Audrey Tom

22-29 maj

Audrey has been practicing yoga for over 30 years and teaching for 13 years. She holds a diploma from the British Wheel of Yoga and the Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation in Chennai, India, where yoga (harmony of mind, body and breath) is used as a tool in healing / therapy. She is also influenced by the work of Vanda Scaravelli.

As a qualified reflexologist and Thai Yoga massage therapist her work is also enriched by these traditions. With the therapeutic aspect of the Krishnamacharya tradition, (which was usually taught one to one, tailor made for each individual’s needs,) and the release based Scaravelli influence, her classes focus on helping to undo deep seated tension so that the heart of one’s strength is regained thus freeing the body and breath and as a result the mind becomes more focused and clear, regaining a sense of vitality, joy and lightness.

There will be two 1.5 hr sessions at 8am and 5pm.

STRONGER FROM INSIDE Deep-working Hatha Vinyasa for stronger bodies and calmer minds

Amidst the luxuriously natural surroundings of Suleyman’s, a week of Hatha flow with Katrina Triffitt offers the space to let go of bodymind tensions and to deepen your strength and flexibility, one conscious breath at a time.

Each day, more than 4 hours of safely structured classes guide you in your personal yoga experience. Morning practice builds steadily into energising flowing sequences and strengthening postures, while the evening practice is designed to release, restore, and nourish the body with a blend of deep Yin, Pranayama and Yoga Nidra.

Drawing inspiration from the many yoga paths which have been part of her life for over 20 years, Katrina teaches Asana in the Hatha Vinyasa style. She was amazed when it significantly evolved her own practice, with a conscious awareness of anatomy, and is confident that its balance between strong-centredness and flow is accessible to all. Katrina is BWY/Yoga Alliance qualified and takes particular influence from the teaching of Simon Low and Vanda Scaravelli. She teaches regularly in London, and runs Yoga for corporate wellness.

Freeing the body – Yoga with Katrin Heuser & Fairlie Gibson

3-10 juli

A real treat for your body, mind and spirit with two yoga sessions a day, the opportunity for nourishing treatments such as Thai Yoga Massage and Aroma Therapy, the most delicious fresh vegetarian food and the unspoilt beauty of nature at Suleyman’s Garden offering the perfect setting to unwind, relax and revitalise. In the yoga classes we will work in an unhurried and playful way to explore how the release of tension, accessing deeper strength and creating space can develop a fabulous sense of freedom in the body.

“Practice transforms us. We need to eat less…we become more beautiful, our faces change and our walk gains in elasticity. A different life begins and the body expresses a happiness never felt before.” (from ‘Awakening the Spine’ by Vanda Scaravelli)

The rest of the day is free to relax, enjoy the pool or nearby cove, chill at the beach, go walking in the shade of the pine forest or along the dramatic coastline, visit ancient sites or pursue other activities such as canoeing, riding or paragliding. On one of the days there will be no yoga, so we can take a trip to a wonderful and completely secluded spring water beach (optional). Non-yoga partners are also welcome to join us.

What last year’s participants said….

“Food is perfect – healthy and so fresh. The location is pure paradise.”

“Fairlie’s classes exceeded my expectations in challenging my habitual ways of thinking and practicing and I’ve come away inspired. Kat’s teaching is very mindful and draws on a great breadth of yoga experiences and teachings.”

“Now that the sights, sounds, whiffs and delicious tastes of that very lovely off the beaten track part of Turkey have started to subside the cosmic feel good factor remains…and I’m not talking about the aftereffects of the stiff Pimms and lemonade that I’ve just downed. What a lovely experience to have had – meeting everyone and being there in such a haven of Suleyman’s Gardens.”

“I honestly can’t recall a holiday that’s had so much internal push and pull and emotional connection as this one ….I still feel like I’m processing all kinds of stuff….in a good way.”

Katrin believes yoga is a never-ending exploration of the body and mind, and a way of discovering the beauty of life. As we bring the awareness to what is happening inside and where we are in the present moment, the body is encouraged to release where it is holding. Her relaxed and fun approach makes the practice accessible to everyone. . She is mostly influenced by Scaravelli inspired teachers and the Hatha Yoga tradition.

For Fairlie yoga is about connecting with the inherent wisdom of the body. Her yoga classes are an invitation to play with sensations of gravity, freeing the breath and awakening the spine, exploring openings and connections that our ‘normal’ movement and postural habits may not have allowed before. This different way of working with the body leads to a different experience of your being. You will be encouraged to work attentively and deeply and to experience the wonderful freedom of a mind and body at play, whether you are interested in learning the Scaravelli Inspired approach to yoga or simply looking to deepen your practice. Since 2003 she has followed the approach of the great teachers who were themselves students of Vanda Scaravelli: Diane Long, Sophy Hoare, John Stirk and others.

Dynamic Vinyasa Yoga Retreat with Tom Hamilton

24-31 juli

Come away with us to sunny Turkey for a week of dynamic vinyasa yoga, immersing yourself in yoga practices of asana, pranayama and meditation to deepen your practice and find inner and outer peace. Apart from twice-daily yoga with Tom and delicious home-grown food from Salesman and his family, you can sunbathe, swim and snorkel in the crystal clear sea, hike along the Lycian Way, visit local ruins, indulge in traditional treatments or simply relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings.

You will be supported and guided by Tom Hamilton, who is the founder of The Yoga Edge yoga studio in London. Tom is an experienced teacher having worked with thousands of students at his own studio and around London. He discovered yoga following a career as a dancer, and is passionate about the power of yoga to empower people to live fully with maximum physical and mental well-being. Tom’s teaching style is fun and accessible. You will be encouraged to go deep, working with your body wherever it is at each day.

The style of yoga is dynamic vinyasa yoga. This is a powerful type of yoga where poses move from one to the next in sequence, encouraging you to build strength from within. However, we will build up slowly, to ensure you learn poses properly and no one is left behind. Through regular and at times intense practice, you will be encouraged to go deep and challenge yourself – improving your physical capacity and working towards your own edge.

Enjoy two blissful yoga sessions each day (except Friday where the group will set off on a full day boat trip). A longer morning practice with energising asanas and breath work and a juicy workshop-style evening practice to go deeper and wind down. Each day we will explore a different theme, working with postures, meditative practices and kriyas (cleansing practices) to release and remove physical and energetic blockages. The more challenging practices will be balanced with guided meditations and breath-work, to deepen your state of presence and relaxation. You will leave the holiday feeling great in your body, calm, energised and happy!

This will be a very special and intimate retreat experience. We’d love to have you join us!

Vinyasa Flow Retreat with Naomi Absalom

7-14 augusti

“Quite simply the best yoga retreat I have ever been on. Richer, fuller, deeper and all encompassing.” Greg, Turkey 2013

Naomi is a very popular teacher at London’s biggest and most acclaimed yoga studios including Triyoga, Indaba and Union Station Yoga. She has been teaching retreats and workshops internationally for 11 years now – Suleyman’s Garden will be her only retreat for 2016 and we expect it to sell out.

Attendees can look forward to two sessions of transformative yoga practices a day; a powerful, dynamic and creative morning practice followed by a mix of restorative, yin and meditative sessions at the end of the day.

Inspired by the power of community and group energy, Naomi’s aim is always to create a safe and nurturing group dynamic where each individual is able to plug into the presenting current of energy to become part of something much greater than themselves. Although in love with playfulness and creativity within movement, she is extremely interested in very good form and alignment, focusing on strong and controlled transitions between the postures so that every moment is felt, recognised and meaningful. Her background training with the incredible Itzhak Helman in Thai Yoga massage informs the hands on assists and adjustments she offers in class.

She is deeply passionate about the art of teaching yoga and has created teacher mentoring programs for teachers all over the UK so that they may learn their art from a place of authenticity, integrity and apprenticeship.

In 2013 she became a trainer with the global advertising agency ‘Ogilvy’ and travels around the world teaching yoga & meditation on their top level management programmes. Most recently she became a teacher for the online yoga platform ‘Movement for Modern Life’.

This retreat will challenge you, guide you, help you to release some of the things that bind you and get you ready to move forward into the rest of your life – a fitter, healthier and happier YOU!

Yoga with Jacqui Payton and Helen Humble

4-11 september

As graduates of Duncan Hulin’s Devon School of Yoga, both Helen and Jacqui have developed their own individual styles of teaching yoga.

Helen has been teaching yoga for 14 years and is a Biomedical Trust trained yoga therapist, as well as teaching as a tutor with the Devon School of Yoga. She brings knowledge of far eastern traditions from her Shiatsu training, combined with 30 years’ experience as a district nurse.

Helen has an interest in Tantra and will be teaching an in-depth session on the pelvic floor and psoas release.

As a teacher, Jacqui continued her studies into the transformative effects of yoga with Judith Hansen Lassiter and is a Relax and Renew Restorative Yoga trainer. She is interested in the way we can surrender all stress and anxiety to our yoga mats as the body and mind relaxes. She is also qualified in teaching students with CFS, ME and other chronic health conditions, making yoga accessible to all.

Both Helen and Jacqui are trained meditation teachers, as well as both being trained in TRE (trauma release exercises), a simple yet effective process that allows neurogenic muscle tremors in the core of the body.

Stress, Tension and Anxiety accumulated from everyday circumstances and more traumatic events over time can make you ill.  This week we aim to reduce the tension, combat the stress and help alleviate the anxiety.

This week promises to be refreshingly holistic, relaxing and fun.

Hatha Yoga Flow – The Sunshine Retreat with Emma Spencer-Goodier

11-18 september

“I loved everything and felt very nurtured Emma. The yoga and teaching were fab :-)”. Ms. Bell. 2017

“I am writing… to express my gratitude for the teaching and guidance you gave this last week… I got an awful lot out of the time and thank you for the wonderful programme you put together. It was full of thoughtful words, authenticity and good humour.” A. Butcher – 2017.

Dappled sunshine, yoga, forests, the wild seashore and the ripening fruits in the gardens; this is a retreat, an escape to Eden and far removed from the bustling tourist routes, a hideaway beneath the mountains for those who seek a space of peace. A taste of old Turkey on the Lycian Way and a potent venue to reveal delight through an immersive yoga programme.

Emma is a respected and long established teacher from the Isle of Wight, where she teaches her regular classes and weekend retreats. She has been teaching overseas retreats now for 15 years – specialising in balancing the important elements of offering inspirational creative yoga classes, a loving, safe and supportive group environment and the need for precious time to simply be on holiday, enjoy great food and relax and restore wellbeing. Her teaching over nearly two decades has evolved into one that provides clarity, invites a fresh understanding of alignment and a deeper internal conscious and energetic awareness as participants flow mindfully through creative graceful sequences. Emma is a Senior Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance UK and has been taught in the lineages of Iyengar, Sivananda and Ashtanga Yoga.

There will be two daily classes with one full day off. The cooler mornings will move participants from meditation, through pranayama and into a dynamic flowing sequence of asana. The evenings will be a quieter restorative practice back towards stillness.

Yoga with Awareness with Ken Eyerman

18-25 september

Ken Eyerman has more than 35 years’ experience teaching Yoga & Bodywork and is a trained practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method. He will bring his wealth of learning to this week’s unique blend of flowing yoga with gentle inner sensing Feldenkrais movement awareness lessons. Ken’s intuitive, spontaneous and hands-on approach places an emphasis on using the breath, an awareness of your inner process and how to use your body efficiently. This combination will ease you into the postures and classes are suitable for all levels of experience, including those who have injuries or are restricted in their movement.

Ken has worked with many teachers over a lifetime’s yoga practice and has developed his own style of teaching, bridging the space between the dynamic and the gentle, spiralling Feldenkrais movements.

“Thank you for an incredible week. For all the adjustments and attention you gave to each of us, it takes a special kind of a person to give so much. You have really shifted my perspective on all things yoga and inspired me to strive for uniqueness in my teaching style.” Dr Leah Deutch – yoga teacher, 2015

“Relaxed, warm, friendly, laid back and very funny, Ken creates an atmosphere in his classes where it is a delight to explore, learn and benefit from his many years of experience. In a seemingly very casual style, he intuitively weaves together absorbing sequences of yoga postures with Feldenkrais techniques.” James Jewell – yoga teacher, Spain

Yoga with Aki Omori

25 september- 2 oktober

Aki writes – I offer this week as a retreat and our intention is to deepen our practice. It means that we see the time away as a conscious ‘retreating’ away from busy-ness of life to dive into yoga, have some moments of quiet to properly rest and reflect, cultivating mindfulness, giving yourself a chance to see what’s really going on in your life and start making choices with clearer perspective.

There will be 3 sessions on most days (one morning meditation & pranayama, one morning asana and one afternoon asana, meditation and pranayama) and some talks on yoga and mindfulness. By the end of the week you will feel the difference and will go home energised, rested and with a clearer mind.’

Having studied many styles of yoga, Aki utilises the differences that each style offers and appreciates where they meet. She runs workshops on Restorative Yoga, Embodied Anatomy and is an experienced Pranayama practitioner. She is trained in Structural Yoga Therapy and certified Somatic Movement Therapist and Educator. Dedicated to Advaita (non-dual) teaching as well as Buddhist philosophy over many years, she enjoys sharing meditation practices and dharma teachings with her students. This to her is the most important aspect of the practice. Aki’s classes are fun and light, and yet profound.

Yoga with Gary Carter and Sharon Farah

2-9 oktober

Gary Carter, founder of the Natural Bodies Centre, has over 30 years of experience in movement physical training, anatomical study and bodywork practices. He is a yoga teacher, yoga teacher trainer, personal trainer, nutritional advisor & shiatsu practitioner. Focusing on movement and hands-on bodywork has proved time & again to be a potent blend of practices to assist his clients & students not only to find health, poise & balance in their bodies but also to ease & deal with pain & injury, be it acute or chronic conditions.

Sharon, born in Brazil to English parents, has lived in London for 20 years. She discovered yoga 13 years ago and has been teaching since 2002. With both Iyengar and Scaravelli influences in her practice and a particular interest in anatomy of movement, Sharon doesn’t teach one particular style of yoga, preferring to encourage students to experience and explore movement and postures through the release of tension and the use of the breath, and to challenge themselves physically and mentally, listening to their bodies, unravelling the tensions and torsions created by our day-to-day lives, allowing space for the body to rediscover its natural balance.

The first 4 days will be focussed on Gary’s anatomy of movement, revealing a completely different way to approach the asanas, playing with gravity, creating the conditions for the body to “undo”. The last 2 days will focus on bringing this knowledge into your own practice and flowing sequences.

Each morning session will begin with meditation, breath work and affirmations. Massage and structural integration will be available daily.
